CHAPTER 12

DAHLIA

Brezok came around the bar and clapped me on the shoulder. “I’m happy to say I managed to convince over ninety percent of the demons to attend a meeting here after closing tonight. Convincing Kaveh to join won you major points with them.”

I lifted one eyebrow at the red-skinned devil. “That’s good news. Are you putting yourself up for nomination?” I’d like to know what kind of demon we will have join us on the council.

Brezok shook his head from side to side. “Nah. I’m busy enough here and with your events. Besides I don’t need to ask to know it won’t pay anything. Nothing like that ever does. It’ll probably be Molvith. Tanarak will make a play for it no doubt, but no one wants a rage demon acting as the leader for such a volatile species.”

The casual way he spoke about having a rage demon was terrifying. They didn’t sound like the kind of beings we wanted on Earth at all. “Well, keep me posted. We will see you for the anniversary party, right?”

Brezok held up a paper calendar. “I’ll be there with bells on.”

We said goodbye to the fame demon and left the Final Swallow. I shivered when the moon shone down on us as we walked outside. I thought it would be daytime when we left. We’d gone in later in the afternoon and hadn't been in there long. How long had it taken Kaveh to make that stone for Phi, anyway? It hadn’t seemed like more than five or ten minutes.

Phi shoved her peridot in her front pocket. “I’m glad the djinn are on our side. I wouldn’t want to make an enemy of them. Kaveh was one scary dude. Good looking, but frightening. And it seems my premonition was right. The sexual tension between the two of you could be cut with a knife.”

Kaitlyn choked and stumbled making the rest of us laugh. The head witch wagged a finger at us. “You need to stop that shit. I’m perfectly happy without the complications of a man. And I certainly don’t need one as controversial as a djinn.”

There was something in Kaitlyn’s voice that hinted at more. There were countless reasons for a woman not to want a man’s attention. The question was why Kaitlyn was opposed to this and if it was something I should help her overcome. “What’s wrong with a djinn? Are they violent? Do they have nasty kinks?”

Kaitlyn rolled her eyes and turned right down Royal Street. “Djinn are notorious playboys. Kaveh is said to be one of the worst. No thank you. I have enough bullshit in my life without adding more. I’m perfectly happy being alone.”

“That doesn’t mean he will continue to be that way. I’ve known many men and women who have had meaningless sex night after night with different people because they hadn’t found the right one for them,” Dani countered.

I nodded in agreement as we passed a tour group of mundies. “You need to keep an open mind where Kaveh is concerned.
